The Real Judgement of Love ~ Lord Jagannatha Accepts Kitri from a Boy

Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj

Srila Sridhar MaharajFrom the chapter “The Real Judgement of Love” in Heart and Halo:

There is one story I heard from my godbrother Vaikanasa Maharaj, who was a brahmana scholar of Orissa, about an incident which occurred in recent history, in connection with the Jagannatha Temple at Puri, where it was customary that no khechuranna (kitri) used to be offered to the Lord.

Lord Jagannath
A drawing of Lord Jagannath

Once there was a raid by the Mohammedans on Orissa, and one of the girls of the royal family was abducted for the pleasure of the Mohammedan general, by his soldiers. He later left the state, but that girl was left on the outskirts of some village or town, and there she gave birth to a child who was a great devotee. It was a very peculiar thing; the girl was also a devotee, but somehow she had to undergo such a horrible experience. She gave birth to a child and he lived on the outskirts of that town. When he grew up he used to cook kitri, that is, rice and beans cooked together, boiled into a half-liquid consistency, and he used to offer that to Jagannatha from afar. By dint of his devotion, Jagannatha had to go there and accept that kitri offering.

One day the boy was perhaps late in his offering; Jagannatha took the kitri but the time was then late for the temple offering, so He had to run back to install Himself in His position in the temple, and a particle of that kitri was on His lips. The pandas, the pujaris (the priestly class) noticed: “What is this? How has this happened? We can detect this is not the proper offering to Jagannatha; then how is it here on His lips?” So it was referred to the leader of the pandas and he also searched, but he could not ascertain the cause. Then it was taken to the king and he also investigated it, “Who has taken this food and smeared it on the mouth of Jagannatha?”

The Jagannath Temple at Puri India
The Jagannath Temple at Puri, India

Finally the priest who had been in charge at the time of the offering of food in the temple was apprehended: “You are responsible! You were in charge of the temple at the time of Jagannatha’s offering, then how has this impure thing come in His mouth? You must explain or you will be punished.” The man was innocent and he said, “I do not know anything; I do not know anything!”

Then, when he was about to be punished, Jagannatha came in a dream to the king as well as to the leading priest: “That man is innocent; don’t disturb him. On the outskirts of the town is My devotee. He offered that food to Me, and I ate it, but the time was late and I had to hurry back to occupy My position in the temple, so My mouth was not cleansed. This is the name of that boy. He is living there; he is My devotee, and I have taken this food there.” And it was as a result of the Mohammedan’s exploitation of the princess that this devotee appeared. So, Krishnabhakti, devotion to Krishna, does not care for the formality of purity or impurity by any worldly considerations; it is independent.

Krishna-bhakti is so powerful and does not care for anything. Jagannatha accepted the offering of that boy who was considered to have the worst fate, a cursed fate. The princess was taken by the Mohammedan, and her issue came in the form of that boy, so he was the “curse of the cursed.” But his offering attracted Jagannatha so much. So, love is wonderfully above everything, surpassing all. Mahaprabhu asked us to accept the path of love, which means giving one’s heart, one’s self. It is so powerful, nothing else can attract Krishna. He is very greedy to eat this love, this prema. He lives on prema. He is the Lord of love. That love has its inner existence; it is the inner existence of all of us. He is Love personified, and there is a tinge within us also; and like ‘birds of a feather,’ love likes love.

The Eternal Form & Pastimes of Lord Jagannath

Temple of Union in Separation: the Samadhi Mandhir of Srila Sridhar Maharaj in Nabadwip

The pastimes of Lord Jagannath give us a glimpse into one of the highest spiritual principles which was expressed by Srila Sridhar Maharaj as “union in separation”. However, due to our consciousness being influenced by material sense enjoyment, we can easily miss these spiritual principles and think that the Lord’s pastimes are similar to ordinary mundane activities. We pray to Srila Gurudev, Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda-dev Goswami Maharaj, that by his mercy we may present this story while staying true to the transcendental principles of our spiritual preceptors.

Lord Krishna’s Pastimes in Dwarka

Once when Krishna was living in the city of Dwarka, Narada Muni, the great mendicant who travels the universe, came into the assembly of Krishna’s 16,108 wives. Narada Muni offered them his respects and began to glorify the Queens saying how they were the best servants of Krishna, and the most glorious devotees in the entire universe. But by his words the Queens could understand a different meaning: that Krishna really wants to return to Vrindavan and taste the love of the gopis.

Lord Krishna in Dwarka

Prompted by Narada Muni, Krishna’s wives began asking Balaram’s mother Rohini, who was also in the assembly, to tell them about Krishna’s pastimes in Vrindavan. She had lived there with Krishna and Balaram before They came to Dwarka. The residents of Dwarka are said to worship Krishna as the Supreme Lord. But the residents of Vrindavan have a very confidential relationship with Krishna that surpasses awe and reverence because it is based on friendship and love. Krishna’s wives wanted to hear about the special quality of love that the cowherd boys and girls have for Krishna and how that love had captured Krishna’s heart in Vrindavan. Cautious that the discussion should not be overheard by Krishna, Rohini asked Krishna’s sister, Subadra, to stand watch at the door and prevent Krishna and Balaram from entering into the assembly.

Lord Krishna

Mother Rohini begins to speak

Remembering her friend Yasoda, who is Krishna’s mother, Rohini then began to speak about Krishna’s wonderful pastimes in Vrindavan. She described how the residents of Vrindavan only know Krishna as their son, their beloved or their friend. Rohini told the Queens, “You sometimes think that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, and you can see His four hands.” She described how in Vrindavan this idea is never present. The inhabitants of Vrindavan see Krishna as an innocent boy who is dancing and playing His flute. His turban is decorated with peacock feathers. He loves, and is loved by, all the cowherd boys and girls.

Meanwhile, Krishna, sensing that He was being talked about, came along with His brother Balaram and standing to the right and left of Their sister Subadra, They could overhear Rohini’s wonderful stories. Just by hearing these stories Krishna became overwhelmed with intense feelings of separation for Vrindavan. He was so completely absorbed in hearing the Vrindavan pastimes, that His heart began to melt. Krishna and Balaram became so ecstatic that Their internal feelings were exhibited externally. Their eyes became very wide! Their heads compressed into Their bodies, and Their limbs retracted! They appeared just like the forms that are worshipped today as Lord Jagannath, Subadra and Baladev in Jagannath Puri.

Lord Jagannath, Subadra & Baladev

Gradually They returned to Their normal consciousness and forms. When Krishna had recovered fully, He could understand that Narada Muni had a hand in this. Narada Muni was worried because Krishna’s extreme feelings of separation had caused this remarkable transformation and he thought that Krishna would be angry with him. Krishna told Narada Muni, “You must have said something that caused the Queens to question Mother Rohini.” Then to Narada Muni’s relief, Krishna told him how happy he was that this had happened and wanted to give Narada Muni a benediction. Hearing that Krishna was happy made Narada Muni happy and he asked, “My desire is that you will remain in those forms somewhere in this world and the whole world will see you. In that form you will be patita-pavana, the savior of the fallen and the entire world will be liberated by your darshan. That is what I want.”

Srila Govinda Maharaj visiting our Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math in Sri Puri Dham

Krishna replied: “Yes, it will be! I will manifest these three Deities and the Sudarshan chakra (Krishna’s disc) in the city of Puri, on the bank of the ocean.”

Jaya Jagannath, Jaya Baladev, Jaya Subadra!

During their childhood they were both students together, so when Mahaprabhu took sannyas Gadadhar Pandit also took sannyas. Likewise when Mahaprabhu decided He would stay in Puri Dham, he also decided to stay in Puri Dham.

Like The Waves of a River

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Krishna, Sri Rama
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in previous ages as Lord Krishna and Lord Ramachandra

Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj often spoke of the glories of Sri Rama and in a recorded conversation with His Divine Grace, published in the Centenary Anthology, he noted, “I was born at midnight, Saturday 10th October, 1895. Navami tithi (lunar day) under the same sign as Lord Ramachandra. Krishna-paksa (dark moon fortnight). Sriman Mahaprabhu was also born on a Saturday. I was the second child. The first was a daughter, but she died early, so Ram Kavach (a protective mantram and amulet) was given to my mother for the protection of the next child, that is, myself. So I was born after my mother took Ram Kavach.   ….When I was in my maternal uncle’s house, for three years for early education in a primary school, I got some help from one of my aunts who taught me Ramayana and Mahabharata. That helped me a great deal… I like sacrifice in life. The magnanimous side. I had affinity for Lord Ramachandra… My attraction to Krishna first came through Bhagavad-Gita, and then through Mahaprabhu. I liked Ramachandra for His magnanimity. I was mainly attracted by the self-giving ideal.”

Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj also spoke lovingly of the pastimes of Sri Ramachandra. After viewing the devotees’ re-enactment of the Ramayana during his visit to Russia, he said, “The whole of India is enlightened by the divine pastimes of Ramachandra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead appearing in Treta-yuga.”

ramadi murtinu kala-niyamena tisthan
nanavataram akarod bhuvanenu kintu
kanna svayam samabhavat parama puman yo
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami
(Sri Brahma Samhita: 5.39)

Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaj has said, “This is a verse from Sri Brahma-samhita in which the incarnation of Lord Ramacandra is described. Ramadi. Not only Rama, but there are many other, innumerable incarnations. They are compared with the waves of a river. As the waves of the river, or the waves of the ocean cannot be counted, similarly, how many incarnations are there of the Supreme Lord it is not possible to count. But out of them, the principal names are mentioned in the sastras. Therefore it is said ramadi. Ramadi means Rama and also other, many incarnations. They are always existing.”

To Protect My Devotees

Arjuna inquires from the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna before the battle of Kurukshetra in Srimad Bhagavad-gita
Sri Krishna reveals to Arjuna: “Whenever there is a decline in religion, I personally come Myself to restore the tradition of the Vedas and to protect My devotees.”

Sri Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita that “whenever there is a decline in religion, I personally come Myself to restore the tradition of the Vedas and to protect My devotees.” Lord Rama is the powerful and noble incarnation of Krishna that appeared in Ayodhya during the Treta Yuga. According to the Vedas, the universe is constantly created and destroyed and each creation is divided in to four yugas, or time periods; Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and the present age of Kali Yuga. Lord Rama performed many glorious pastimes during His time on earth and many love to hear of the heroic pastime in which He conquered the demon Ravana, who had abducted His wife Sita. Lord Ramachandra’s righteous pastimes are beautifully told in the Ramayana by Maharishi Valmiki, who was instructed to write the Ramayana by his spiritual master Narada Muni.

Most of the ancient Puranas including the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata Purana) also give accounts of Lord Rama’s life. About five hundred years ago, Sri Tulsidas wrote about the pastimes of Lord Rama in a lovely and sweet poetic style in his Ramacharitamanasa. Some refer to his writing as the Tulsi Ramayana. In this beautiful work, Tulsidas references all the stories of Lord Rama contained in various Vedic literatures including the Valmiki Ramayana and the Brahmananda Purana. Because he relates the story of the Ramayana in a mood of deep devotion and love, it is cherished and honored by the devotees.

Rama-rajya

Lord Ramachandra exemplifies the role of a perfect human being. He was an ideal son, husband, friend, and king. The ninth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam reveals that Sri Rama was a saintly king and that everything in his character was good, untinged by qualities like anger. By example, He taught noble behavior for everyone, and especially for householders, in terms of varnasrama-dharma. The kingdom of Lord Ramachandra is referred to as Rama-rajya—a kingdom of good government where everyone is happy. People are very fond of the pattern of Rama-rajya, and even today politicians sometimes form a party called Rama-rajya, but unfortunately they have no obedience to Lord Rama. It is sometimes said that people want the kingdom of God without God. Such an aspiration, however, cannot be fulfilled. Good government can exist when the relationship between the citizens and the government is like that exemplified by Lord Ramachandra and His citizens.

Srila Sridhar Maharaj, Srila Govinda Maharaj and Srila Prabhupad
Srila Sridhar Maharaj, Srila Govinda Maharaj and Srila Prabhupad

Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaj has shown how the Srimad-Bhagavatam teaches that, historically, the king was responsible even for severe cold or severe heat. “The kings were so much responsible. They were always thinking of the happiness of the citizens, and the citizens were also so nice. There is no difference between the Lord’s form, His name, His pastimes, and Himself. He is absolute. Therefore if you chant the holy name of Rama or you see the form of Rama or you talk of His transcendental pastimes, everything, that means you are associating with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So we take advantage of these days when the incarnation of God appears or disappears, and we try to associate with Him. By His association we become purified. Our process is purification. Krishna consciousness means simply we are purifying our consciousness. To make successful the human life or the mission of human life, the Vedic culture is very nice. And by spreading Krishna consciousness, by adopting the process of Krishna consciousness, you can revive that cultural life, sublime life.”

The Devotional Aspect

Lord Ramachandra is worshiped along with His wife Sita, younger brother Lakshman, and His greatest devotee Hanuman.

“Sita was submissive, faithful, shy and chaste, always understanding the attitude of her husband. Thus by her character and her love and service she completely attracted the mind of the Lord”.

Srila B. R. Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj told how gradually the idea came to him that “the feminine ego-conception is an ideal of a very noble type wherein sacrifice, the devotional aspect, is very prominent. He gave the example of Sita, Draupadi, and many others, especially the supreme example of the Gopis. The standard established by the Gopis has shown that self-forgetfulness, self-sacrifice, and self-surrendering reaches its zenith, its highest conception, in the lady aspect. The passive aspect holds the highest position: that viewpoint came gradually and caused a turnabout within my mind.” In Sri Sita Devi we also find this highest conception of devotional purity.

“I always offer my humble service to the beautiful lotus feet of Sri Ramachandra, the Guru of the three worlds at whose left side is Sri Sita Devi with Her divine brilliance and hue of molten gold. She is holding the lotus by Her supine with Her five fingers. In this way, the lotus appears as if it has five more petals.”

Exalted and Dignified Position

Lord Rama and Hanuman hugging
Lord Rama and His eternal devotee Hanuman

ram rasayan tumhare pasa

(
Hanuman Chalisa)

“Oh, Hanumanji! You hold the essence of devotion to Ram, always remaining His servant.”

In his Brhad Bhagavatamrita, Srila Sanatan Goswami upholds Hanuman as the perfection of dasya-rasa, or servitude. Hanuman is the devotee, the servant of God, to the highest degree.

Within this mundane world the idea of servitude, of slavery, is a detestable prospect. But in the spiritual realm, and in the practice of sincere spiritual aspirants, wholesale surrender and slavery to the Supreme is acknowledged as the most exalted and dignified position. It is unfathomable, but it is our highest ideal. Our highest jewel. It is not a cheap thing, but rather, our capacity to offer ourselves fully, to realize our negative character, that ideal is our most precious gem. And if we can find that position in which “we will always be with folded palms, and where we can never be master,” then the higher Authority must have mercy and must extend down to our level to offer gracious help. When we hear the qualities of the perfect servant of the Lord, we remember Sri Hanuman.

Blessed Lord and Master

In Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s lila, Hanuman appears as a physician named Murari Gupta. Srila BR Sridhar Maharaj has said, “Mahaprabhu tried to convert Murari Gupta, but He could not. Then he left. His strong inclination was towards Ramachandra. But still, Murari Gupta had some respect for this. Then, also, perhaps Rupa Goswami and Sanatana tried their best to take the father of Jiva Goswami, Anupama – he was a devotee of Ramachandra – to take him to krsna-lila, but they also failed. So, they tried, and that has got some value, even by Mahaprabhu and Sanatana, that is not a chance coincidence or a flickering or false attempt. So it is possible, and at the same time, there is such a strong and innate nature, that cannot be converted. That faith, that thing, is in the jiva.” Mahaprabhu tested Murari Gupta’s devotion and ultimately glorified him for his exclusive devotion to Lord Ramachandra. The Lord said to him, “For my pleasure, please recite that verse you composed.” Murari Gupta cited his book Sri Krishna Chaitanya-charita:

“I worship the blessed Lord and Master of the three worlds, Sri Ramachandra. He wears a brilliant crown covered with a strand of jewels with shining lights in all directions. His dazzling earrings defeat the brilliance of Sukra and Brhaspati. His beautiful face looks like a pure spotless moon.

Lord Rama And Laksman
Lord Rama And Laksman

“I worship the lotus feet of the master of the three worlds, Sri Ramachandra, whose charming eyes appear like blossoming lotus flowers. His red lips look like bimba fruits, and His well-shaped nose attracts everyone. His wonderful smile embarrasses the moonlight.”

After hearing these verses, Sri Gaurahari put His feet on Murari’s head. Then He wrote the name “Ramadasa” on his forehead and said, “Murari, from today on, by My mercy, you’ll be known as Ramadasa. Without Raghunatha, you cannot live a moment. Know for certain that I am the same Lord Raghunatha (Rama).”

Sri Rama is so compassionate and merciful. In Sri Sri Prapanna-jivanamritam, Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj writes, “If one seeks refuge in Him just once, He awards fearlessness to the person forever,” and quotes a verse from the Ramayana:

sakrd eva prapanno yas tavasmiti cha yachate
abhayam sarvada tasmai, dadamy etad vratam mama
(Sri Sri Prapanna-jivanamritam: 9.4)

“It is my pledge that if anyone just once sincerely petitions Me for shelter, saying, ‘I am Yours,’ then I grant him courage for all time to come.”

~~~~~~~~
Lord Ramachandra’s spotless name and fame, which vanquish all sinful reactions, are celebrated in all directions, like the ornamental cloth of the victorious elephant that conquers all directions. Great saintly persons like Markandeya Rishi still glorify His characteristics in the assemblies of great emperors like Maharaja Yudhishthira. Similarly, all the saintly kings and all the demigods, including Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma, worship the Lord by bowing down with their helmets. Let me offer my obeisances unto His lotus feet.
(Srimad-Bhagavatam: 9.11.21)
Armed with a bow and arrow and accompanied by Your younger brother and Janaka’s daughter, O Lord Sri Rama, pray dwell forever like a moon in the firmament of my heart.
Sri Hanuman – The Beautiful Servant of Lord Rama
Hanuman
When we think about the beautiful pastimes of Lord Ramachandra we remember how our Guru Varga always praise Hanuman’s unflinching devotion. Hanuman’s devotion for Lord Ramachandra has always been a guiding point of what we aspire to as servants of the divine. We have heard that in Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Sriman Mahaprabhu asks his devotee Murari Gupta, who is Hanuman himself, to embrace the worship of Lord Sri Krishna above all, abandoning any other worship. Murari Gupta tries heart and soul to follow Sriman Mahaprabhu’s advice, praying and praying to the lotus feet of Lord Ramachandra and crying through the night. The next morning, however, when he returns to Sriman Mahaprabhu he desperately prays to his lotus feet to just let him die–for he cannot abandon the service of the lotus feet of his dear Lord Ramachandra:
ragunathera paya muni veciyachon matha
kadhite na pari matha, mane pai vyatha
(Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita: Madhya-lila, 15.149)
“Murari Gupta said, ‘I have sold my head unto the lotus feet of Ragunatha [Lord Ramachandra]. I cannot withdraw my head, for that would give me too much pain.”
Seeing his devotion to Lord Ramachandra, Sriman Mahaprabhu is actually very pleased. He embraces Murari Gupta and praises his beautiful mood, revealing that He was only testing his faith in Lord Ramachandra. Sriman Mahaprabhu then addresses His other devotees,
saksat hanuman tumi sri-rama-kinkara
tumi kene chadibe tanra carana kamala
sei murari-gupta ei–mora prana sama
inhara dainya suni’ mora phataye jivana
(Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita: Madhya-lila, 15.156-157)
“In this way, I congratulated Murari Gupta saying, ‘Indeed, you are the incarnation of Hanuman. Consequently you are the eternal servant of Lord Ramachandra. Why should you give up the worship of Lord Ramachandra and His lotus feet?’ Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu continued, ‘I accept this Murari Gupta as My life and soul. When I hear of his humility, it perturbs My very life.’”
Such is the nature of Lord Hanuman’s devotion. Param Guru Maharaj, Srila Sridhar Maharaj, says that “When it is necessary for Hanuman to burn the golden city of Lanka, his humility is not disturbed. He is as humble as anyone can be in carrying out the order of Lord Ramachandra. He is fully given, wholly surrendered.” He also explains in the Search for Sri Krishna: Reality the Beautiful, that during his comparative study of the devotional world, Narada Muni converses with many devotees including his disciple Prahlada Maharaj, who glorifies Hanuman’s devotion:
“Approaching Prahlada Maharaj, Narada said, ‘I have come to see you, Prahlada, because Lord Shiva also appreciates your position. You are really a devotee of Lord Krishna. You are so fortunate! I have come to see how you are.’ Prahlada Maharaj told him, ‘Gurudeva, you are all in all. Have you come to test me? Whatever fortune I may have, I have received by your grace. I was born in a family of demons, so the demonic qualities have not exclusively left me. Don’t you know that in Naimisaranya, I went to fight with Lord Vishnu? I repent for that, but what can I do? He has given me such a position. I cannot have the privilege of direct service to Him, but only mentally I think of Him. I think that He is everything, but I do not have the great fortune of rendering service to Him. Hanuman is really a devotee. How fortunate he is! What grace he has received! He gave everything to Lord Ramachandra. I envy his situation, but what can I do? God’s dispensation is absolute. We must accept that. Hanuman’s position is really enviable. How attached to his master he is, and what a great magnitude of service he has done for Lord Rama.’
From there, Narada Muni went to visit Hanuman. He approached Hanuman’s residence, playing on his vina the mantram: Rama Rama Rama Rama Rama. When Hanuman suddenly heard the name of his master, Lord Rama, he jumped towards that direction, and even in the sky, embraced Narada Muni. Hanuman said, ‘Oh, who is helping me to hear the sound of Lord Rama’s holy name? After such a long time, the sound of Rama nama is enlivening me. I was dying without hearing the name of Rama.’ Ecstatic tears were running down the eyes of both of them. Then Narada Muni went to Hanuman’s quarters, and began to praise his fortune, saying, ‘How fortunate you are! Oh, Hanuman, you serve Lord Ramachandra so intimately; you do not know anything but your master, Lord Rama. You rendered such great service to Him that your service has become the ideal for the whole of human society.’
Hanuman told Narada, ‘Yes, by His grace I was able to do something, but it is all His grace; I am nothing, I am worthless. But I hear that now Lord Ramachandra has come as Lord Krishna. Although I don’t like any incarnation other than Lord Rama, I have heard from a distance how Krishna, who is Ramachandra Himself, is showing His favor to the Pandavas. The Pandavas are very fortunate because the Lord is dealing with them like an intimate friend. So, I have great appreciation for the fortune of the Pandavas.’ In this way, Hanuman began to praise the Pandavas for their fortune.” Narada Muni then went to meet the Pandavas.
We can can understand from Param Guru Maharaj’s words that the beautiful and sweet example set by Hanuman is instructive for us as aspiring servitors. He served his Lord with full love and affection. In fact he knows nothing but his Lord’s lotus feet and his service is millions and millions of times greater than our meager attempts to serve. Still, on this auspicious day of Rama-navami, we can always pray to the lotus feet of Hanumanji to mercifully help us become better servants of our own Gurudev.
Lord Rama, The Avatar of a Forgotten Age
Posted by Hasyapriya Das on Saturday, March 31st, 2012 in Seva Ashram Post | Comments (0)
Lord Rama
Long, long ago in an age when men lived for a thousand years and noble kings ruled our planet, there lived a great king named Lord Ramachandra. Actually He was not an ordinary king. He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, incarnated in India as the son of Maharaj Dasarath, the king of Ayodhya. He was the avatar during an age known as the Treta yuga, and had a greenish complexion like a beautiful parrot. Why would God have come to Earth? He appears throughout the ages to re-establish religious principles and rid the planet of the most evil and demoniac people who are disturbing society.
He also comes to enjoy loving pastimes with His dear-most devotees. The Supreme Lord loves His devotees and they love Him. They therefore take birth as His friends, mother, father, brothers, wife, servants and sometimes even as animals such as cows and monkeys.
Lord Rama was raised to be a perfect ruler. He personified justice, mercy, strength and all other good qualities. The citizens of Ayodhya were very happy to know that Maharaj Dasarath had such a qualified successor. However, as fate would have it, to honor a vow that his father had made, Lord Rama accepted fourteen years of exile to the forest. Everyone was heartbroken. No one could believe the situation, but because Lord Rama was so noble, He readily accepted His fate. He left His father’s palace for the forest accompanied by His brother Laksman and His wife Sita Devi.
Many pastimes took place while Lord Rama lived in the forest; however, nothing compared to when the Rakshasa king Ravana kidnapped His dear wife Sita Devi, whom He loved with all His heart. Laksman and Rama looked everywhere for Sita but could not find her. Rama thought of her constantly and His mind was distracted by grief due to her separation. He could not eat and hardly slept.
While searching for Sita, Rama and Laksman saved the life of Sugriva, a great monkey king who was being hunted by his demoniac brother Vali. After that, Lord Rama enlisted Sugriva along with his mighty monkey general Hanuman and all the monkey tribes, in the search for His missing Sita. A frantic search ensued. Sugriva ordered all monkeys, gorillas, apes, bears and other animals to search the four directions for Sita Devi. Sugriva was so intense that he ordered: “Anyone who does not report back to me within one month will be executed!” Lord Rama was very happy with Sugriva’s efforts to help him in this desperate time.
Soon word came that Hanuman had found Sita in Ravana’s island city of Lanka, where she was being held captive. Meeting with Sugriva, Hanuman and the other monkey chiefs, Lord Rama discussed how to cross over the ocean and rescue her.
At this time Ravana’s brother Vibhishana left Ravana’s palace in Lanka to join Rama’s army. Vibhishana had tried in vain to convince his brother Ravana to return Sita and make peace with Rama, but Ravana was convinced that mere humans and animals could never defeat him. Ravana considered himself such a great warrior because even the Lord of Death, Yamaraj, had retreated in battle against him. Little did he know what the real truth was about Lord Rama.
When Vibhishana came to Lord Rama, one by one, each of the monkey leaders expressed distrust for him. They said, “He is the brother of Ravana, how can he be trusted?” When Hanuman spoke though, he told the opposite–that he trusted Vibhishana and did not detect any deceitfulness in him. Lord Rama agreed. He stated, “If a person comes to me saying ‘I am yours only once, then I shall protect him from danger forever. This is my solemn vow I make before you all.” All the great monkey chiefs were deeply moved by Rama’s speech. Sugriva said tearfully, “O Rama your knowledge is perfect and you are always devoted to virtue. My doubts are gone.”
Now Vibhishana, as an ally and friend, helped devise a plan to cross the ocean. To reach the island of Lanka they would build a bridge! Lord Ramachandra began the enormous task. Meanwhile Hanuman, who had super strength and was blessed with a boon that he could fly, could easily cross the ocean simply by jumping over it. The Lord is so merciful upon His pure devotees that He presents them as even more powerful than Himself.
With incredible strength the army of monkey soldiers uprooted giant trees and lifted great mountain peaks, which they carried to the sea. Soon there were gigantic piles of trees and rocks all over the beach. One particular monkey named Nala was the son of the demigods’ famous architect, Vishvakarma. Under his direction the monkeys began throwing everything they had collected into the sea and tying it all together with vines. They engraved each rock with the holy name of Rama and the rocks began to float on the water.
Feeling very excited, the monkeys built over 100 miles of bridge just in the first day. Seeing their own progress they became even more enthusiastic and within only five days completed a bridge that spanned over 800 miles and was 80 miles wide. While demigods and saintly rishis watched from above in amazement, the monkeys and bears leapt and ran onto the bridge laughing and shouting with joy! Rama rode on Hanuman’s shoulders and Angada carried Laksman as the ferocious army of monkeys and bears crossed the bridge to Lanka.
Lord Rama, Laksman, millions of monkeys led by Hanuman, Sugriva and Angada, and legions of bears led by Jambuvan, all arrived on the outskirts of Lanka ready for battle. The battle cry was given and they began an attack on the city. The brutal battle went on for many days and nights. At one point Rama and Laksman were paralyzed by Ravana’s son Indrajit’s poisonous arrows. Hanuman was dispatched to retrieve a special herb to heal them, but when he flew to the Himalaya Mountains he found that the herbs had hidden themselves from view. Undeterred, Hanuman lifted the whole mountaintop into the sky and carried it to the battlefield. There the herbs were discovered and administered to Rama and Laksman, who recovered miraculously from all their wounds. Shortly thereafter, Ravana himself entered the battle and was defeated by Lord Rama.
Finally Sita Devi was released and great celebrations followed. However, to prove her chastity, Sita Devi entered into fire. Agni Dev, the god of fire himself, carried Sita Devi from within the fire back to Lord Rama, proclaiming to everyone her purity and chastity. Now the fourteen years of exile had ended and they all returned to Ayodyha, where Lord Rama ruled for many, many years.
Jaya Sita, Jaya Rama!
